It is associated with the Sir Edmund Hilary's expedition to the top of Mount Everest in 1953. However, contrary to popular belief, the Rolex Explorer was worn by Tenzing Norgay, Sir Edmund Hilary's Sherpa guide, while Sir Edmund wore a Smiths Everest watch. True to form, the Rolex Explorer 1, even today, has retained it's original handsome look with the 3, 6, 9 white Arabic numerals and white triangle-shaped hour marker at 12, on a black background.
