Native American made chip inlay jewelry really took off in popularity in the 1950s when brothers Tommy and Charlie Singer lead the way with some really outstanding pieces that are worth a small fortune today. The concept and technique soon became a victim of the Pacific Rim knockoff sweatshops as cheap and really dreadful imports began proliferating in southwest curio and souvenir shops. I remember seeing basket after basket of Taiwanese chip inlay rings and tinny bracelets in every store along old Route 66 when I was very young. The creator of this amazing men's or women's (if you like the larger watch movements like I do) chip inlay eagle watch is none other than Tommy Singer's son, Richard Singer, who learned silversmithing from his father and has been helping his father for several years. He's now on his own and resurrecting the designs and techniques that made his father and uncle famous. As his father's health continues decline, Richard has created his his own line of jewelry and began marketing them about two years ago. So the passing of the torch has begun. The Native American jewelry business can be enormously fascinating, frustrating, and even occasionally entertaining. The slightly humorous aspect to all of this is that Richard doesn't want his father to know he's making and selling his own jewelry. How he expects to keep such a huge secret in the small, gossipy Navajo world of Indian jewelry is beyond me. I think by the time you read this, however, his father will know :-) Richard continues the family tradition of fine overlay story scene work. This impressively large handmade cuff bracelet watch features hundreds of genuine finely cut turquoise and coral chip sterling silver overlays forming turquoise and coral mountain eagle designs on the shanks. Both the turquoise coral eagle overlays and the watch are surrounded with miniature hand stamped sun designs. The scalloped sterling silver tabs that help secure the watch movement to the bracelet are also beautifully hand stamped with mountain, sun, and sun ray designs. In native Americna culture, the eagle is the Messenger to Heavens who carries prayers to the Great Spirit. This slightly domed contoured cuff style bracelet watch has a maximum width 2," and eventually tapers to a generous width of 1 and 7/16ths" at both terminals. It has an inside measurement of 5¾" with a carefully adjustable opening gap of 1." If your wrist is 6¾" to 7" in circumference, this should fit little or no gentle adjustment of the shanks and /or terminals. The reliable silver tone quartz watch movement has an easy to read white mother of pearl watch face, three silver tone hands, and italicized black numbers at each hour mark. It comes with an already installed standard complimentary watch battery that's available world wide whenever it needs replacement. His father's early pieces are collectors' items today, and this early Richard Singer piece could be as well! Richard's hallmark and sterling stamp are on the inside surface of the bracelet.
