Strange Fruit; black skulls, blood red leaves and white vintage glass magnolias tell the story. Southern trees bear strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black body swinging in the Southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant South, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh, Then the sudden smell of burning flesh. Here is fruit for the crows to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop, Here is a strange and bitter crop. "Strange Fruit", the song that inspired this necklace was composed by Abel Meeropol, a Russian Jewish immigrant to the U.S., and made popular by Billie Holiday. Meeropol is said to have written it after viewing photographs of the lynchings of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, which were being sold door to door in the neighborhood. They didn't have the Enquirer and the Star back then. ...and a bit more history.. Abel Meeropol and his wife Anne adopted the children of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg after their conviction and execution. The handmade wire wrapped beaded chain is 18" (45.72cm) long, and closes with an artisan hook. All silver is antiqued sterling. It will be shipped USPS with insurance and domestic tracking included in the shipping price. I do use signature confirmation for shipments over $100. International buyers not mentioned below please convo for shipping options.
