This stunning lovely has all the jazz of the upcoming Jazz Era, yet was probably made years before it. The frame is square with a single 24 inch chain loop that doubles over so it can be either short or longer. It connects to both sides of the purse. The frame is embossed with a geometric diamond pattern, consistent with the dramatic geometric pattern in the purse. The background beads are round pearly white beads. They provide a lustrous sheen that really makes the designs stand out. In the center of the purse is a many-pointed star (or a sun?) made from shiny, faceted gold beads. The center of the star is hallow and has a smaller gold ring and lighter and darker silver beads. The star is outlined by shiny faceted silver beads. In each of the 4 corners and around the edge of the purse are stars and geometric silver shapes surrounded by row of silver beads. Very distinctive. The bottom of the bag has fringe that 'weaves' together and makes 4 chevrons. The majority of the fringe is pearly white, except where the strands are joined together with a silver bead. The bottom of the fringe has silver beads, followed by gold beads and ending with a knot of silver beads. All of the beads for the fringe are in place. Immaculate. I *believe* that the designs for this purse were inspired by the early Egyptian explorers back at the turn of the last century. (I am not an expert in purses but have read about the style influences of discoveries made by Egyptologists in the 1880-1920s.) These early geometrical designs later became some of the motifs used in Art Deco. Near the bottom, in the second row from the bottom, is a gold bead where there should be a silver one. I believe this is a "maker's bead". Maker's beads were beads that were off-color and intentionally slipped into a design to indicate who made the purse. The beads and the design for this beauty are just as fresh and lovely today as they were over 100 years ago. The lining is intact, but some of the tacking along the frame has pulled away. There is a small pocked on one side. On that pocket is a tag that says "Made in France". It is very hard to read. However, when my mother collected this purse it was easier to read and she included a note to that effect. It appears that there used to be a fob of some sort on the front. All that is left now is a ring. That is the only defect that I can find on the purse. This charming bag is 3 inches wide and 4.75 inches long, plus 2.5 inches of fringe. This bag is the epitome of elegance and spunky! Additional photos are happily available upon request, including a tight shot of the makers bead. This purse is sold as photographed, so please do not hesitate to request additional photos. (71)
