BIG New Old Stock Original Vintage Driva Chronograph Wrist Watch Dial, 1940s Diameter: 34.5 mm Caliber: Landeron L48 movement and derivatives of this caliber. Form: Flat Driva Watch Company Little appears to be known about Driva as a company. Rather, the firms production of complicated and specialty wristwatches, as well as chronographs are what bears bears witness to Driva's existance... and genius, albeit unfortunately ahead of it's time. In the early 1930s, Driva undertook what was probably the world's first industrial scale production of an "affordable" quarter repeater wristwatch... and these watches were rectangular in shape, which rendered them even more eyecatching and unusual in their stainless steel cases. However this attempt at introducing a major innovation was ill fated, with only some 1500 watches produced before production ceased. The 1930s consumer simply didn't find value in a watch that chimed the time. After all radium dials had become common place for telling time in the dark! Interestingly, a stock of these Driva repeater movements and their stainless steel cases remained in "a cupboard", until they were rediscovered by an enterprising watch dealer in 1985. This stock was finished, assembled and then sold to eager collectors.
