This is one of the most magnificent pieces I've ever had the pleasure of having in the shop: a very special pin-style pocket watch encrusted with delicate seed pearls and adorned with beautifully hand-painted enamel. Feminine and ladylike, it reminds us of nothing less than Marie Antoinette herself...who may in fact be the beautiful woman featured on this piece! A lovely portrait adorns one side while a beautiful miniature clock ticks away on the other side. The portrait side of this charming watch opens to reveal a sweet engraving on the watch movement cover reading: "A from W Christmas 1897" (photos available upon request). We're just dying to know who "A" and "W" were!! This cover plate also flips up to access the watch movements. The watch face side opens to access the hands when resetting is in order. What do we know about this piece? The hallmarks are Swiss and date the watch to the 1880s, making it a somewhat unusual style for its time. It is possible that it was made to look like the watch styles of the 1700s, giving it an "antique" look, but it is more likely that the watch case does date from the 1700s and was about a century old when new works were put in. The watch would also likely have been assayed to comply with new precious metal laws in the 1890s, accounting for the more modern assay marks. The portrait is thought to be of Marie Antoinette herself, as she is often associated with roses (and as such they are often included in her portraiture). It's possible that the original wearer of the watch in the 1700s had sympathies toward the doomed queen and wore this watch to commemorate her...a romantic story indeed! The piece measures 2" in height and the clock face is 1" in diameter. The shipping price will include insurance. Please contact me if you have any questions.
