Before we take the features tour on this sweet little beauty, we d like to offer up a bit of its St. Louis history. Mermod Jaccard Co. was a highly reputable retailer that many in the area looked to for quality jewelry, silver, cut glass, clocks, and more. In the late 1880s/early 1900s, Mermod Jaccard billed itself as the Grandest Jewelry Establishment in the World, offering an extensive range that included men s and ladies pocket watches, with their own manufacturer for Swiss-made watches (particularly ladies watches) in Ste. Croix, Switzerland, led by Mr. Jaccard s brother, Justin. This lovely ladies Mermod Jaccard Lady Constant pocket watch, with watch chain and opal slide, features a beautiful, ornate gold-filled engine-turned case, with a lightly monogrammed (AW) cartouche on the case front, and elements that date the watch to the late Victorian / Edwardian periods. The white enamel dial bears the Mermod Jaccard Co. name above St. Louis, MO, with black roman numeral hour markers, black hands, and a subsidiary seconds dial. The winding stem is positioned at 3 o clock, with a lever for setting the time near 5 o clock. Measuring approx. 28mm across the face of the watch (34.5mm across the outside of the case), this ladies pocket watch appears to fall near the 12 Lignes range on the Swiss measurement chart (a 4/0 or 3/0 for American movements of comparable size). (Measuring from the case base to the top of the bow is 47mm.) The Swiss-made movement is believed to date from 1880 to 1910 and has a three-quarter plate (very similar to Elgin s Model 1, 0 size) that bears the Lady Constant brand name, along with the Justin Auguste Jaccard / Justin Jaccard-Jaques S mark, registered in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland in 1880. We do not know the jewel count on this movement, but our research revealed another Lady Constant Mermod Jaccard pocket watch that was listed as 11/15J. The serial number on this movement is 14240. The watch chain has a full length of 29 and is marked GLB Co. on the hook. The dainty round slide is embellished on one side with a 2mm opal set in a star burst design. Wind this little beauty and she starts right up, keeping good time, although we don t know how recently the watch may have been serviced or cleaned. Looking for a sweet Swiss-made pocket watch that would make any lady or collector proud? This watch with chain and slide is a real gem!
