Signed Bates & Bacon antique Victorian chunky yellow gold filled pocket watch vest chain. Traditional curb links with tri lobed attachment ring. Measures 12" long from the swivel to the T bar x 4.5mm width. With an additional 1-3/8" long piece from which to hang a fob. The swivel is hallmarked "1/20 12K GF". A nice chunky size for a 16 or 18 size pocket watch. Tell us what size your watch is and we will be happy to take a picture of this chain with a watch of comparable size, so you can better judge the proportions! In excellent near-mint condition, circa 1900. Looks seldom if ever worn. About the maker: *"Bates & Bacon- Attleboro, Massachusetts. Advertised in the trade publication Jewelers Circular in 1900 & 1915, Jewelers Circular Keystone 1943, Keystone 1922 & 1931. Successors before 1915 to G.A. Dean Company. Succeeded by Briggs, Bates & Bacon. Bates & Bacon was organized in 1856 by George M. Bacon and J.M. Bates. Around 1919 it was owned by Amos Blackinton and Frank A. Tappan. They manufactured chains, pencils, knives, jewelry and bracelet fobs. An advertisement of 1905 features their "Bates" Bracelets (Kant Kum Off) with a patent pending. The Bates & Bacon makers mark appeared on swivels of their watch chains." * from American Jewelry Manufacturers by Dorothy T. Rainwater- THE "Go To" reference book for maker marks in my opinion.
