This is a First State Watch Factory Moscow USSR type 1 wristwatch. It was made in the 1938. Hampden Watch Company was founded in 1866 by Donald Mozart and George Rice, Provident RI. In 1887 the company moved to Springfield Mass. The Company was later bought by John C. Dueber. John C. Dueber owned one of the largest companies manufacturing pocket watch cases in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Many other watch case manufactures united together in a boycott against the Dueber Watch Case Company after an anti-trust law was passed in 1886. Dueber had a major business decision to make. Could he go up against this threat and keep his business going or would he have to give in to the competition? He decided to buy the Hampden Watch Company of Springfield, MA and form the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company producing both watch movements and cases. He moved the newly merged company to Canton, OH in 1889 and by the end of that first year, they were producing 600 watches a day! The first 16 size watch was produced the following year. The company continued until 1930, when the entire factory along with all tools and parts, was sold to Armen Hammer for $325,000 who moved it all to Russia, where it became known as the Amtorg Watch Co. Twenty-eight freight cars full of machinery and parts made their way to Moscow to establish the first Soviet watch factory. Twenty-one former Dueber-Hampden watchmakers, engravers and various other technicians helped to train the Russian workers in the art of watchmaking as part of the Soviet's first Five-Year Plan. Amtorg, continues in operation today. To start production, four types of watches were chosen: a man’s pocket watch with 15 jewels for the enterprises of the Narkomat (Ministry) of Means of Communications, a man’s wristwatch with 7 jewels for the Red Army; a man’s pocket watch with 7 jewels and a ladies wristwatch with 15 jewels to be sold in the market. The first creation of this new factory were pocket watches called “the 1st type†or K43 with a side seconds hand. Although at the start, the factory needed some technical help from the American and the German specialists, after two years, it was able to resolve most of the technical issues and continued to develop independently. Almost from the beginning the 1st SWF exported its watches and soon after launch, new production development was started. According to the order of the Chief Military Aviation Administration, airplane board clocks were produced, and in June 1932 a decision to organize stopwatches production was made. In the same year technical renovation and production line upgrades were started. In 1935 – 36 the factory received over 120 new machining tools from several world’s leading companies and some equipment was made by the factory itself. By 1936 the number of machining tools had increased by 1.5 times. On December 16th 1935, Mr. M. Kalinin signed a resolution to award the name of Sergey Mironovich Kirov to the 1st SWF. From 1935 until 1941, the 1st SWF Kirova produced about 2.7 million of the “1st type†pocket and wristwatches. -the case of the watch is made of the chromium plated brass -chromium plated brass back -15 jewels -new genuine leather strap -hand-winding (for everyday use need winding every day) Overall dimensions are: -length - 53mm -width with crown - 48mm -thickness - 15mm -watch crystal diameter - 37mm The watch is fully serviced, running well and keeps correct time.
